Cannes, France - Stars from Russell Crowe to Jennifer Lopez raised 5.36 million euros (6.7 million dollars) at the Cannes film festival for the fight against HIV-AIDS, then dug deep to help Haiti.
The millions were raised at the annual gala hosted during the film festival by AmFAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research -- one of the biggest celebrity events in Europe. It had raised 3.23 million euros last year.
After the dinner, one of the world's top AIDS fundraising events of the year, Crowe and singer Lionel Ritchie collected 80,000 euros (100,000 dollars) for Haiti at a party attended by actor Benicio Del Toro and Elisabeth Banks.
Other attendees at the AmFAR event included the actress Naomi Watts, star of two films at the film festival, and the celebrity socialite Paris Hilton.
Spanish actors Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem meanwhile ran an auction of red carpet dresses worn at the Oscars and Cannes by Watts, Scarlett Johannson, Diane Kruger, Charlize Theron, Marion Cotillard, Demi Moore, Salma Hayek and Gwyneth Paltrow.
They collected 270,000 euros at the sale, also held to help fight AIDS.
Other prizes auctioned included the opportunity to spend a day with former US president Bill Clinton, which drew a price of 180,000 euros. Tickets to the party cost 118,000 euros for a table of 10.
