Russell Crowe is heading to New York to play the lead in Voltage Prods.’ drama “Fathers and Daughters,” directed by Gabriele Muccino.
Besides Voltage, production companies are Busted Shark Prods., Fear of God Films and Leone Films. Producers are Craig J. Flores and Nicolas Chartier of Voltage and Sherryl Clark of Busted Shark.
Crowe and Keith Rodger will also exec produce via their Fear of God production shingle. AndreaLeone Films will also co-produce and handle Italian distribution rights.
“Fathers and Daughters,” a Blacklist script penned by Brad Desch, is a love story between a father and daughter living in New York City 25 years apart. Crowe will portray a famous novelist and widower struggling with mental illness as he tries to raise his 5-year-old daughter; the story will also focus on the 30-year-old daughter’s life in present-day Manhattan where she battles the aftermath of her troubled childhood.
The female lead has not been cast.
Crowe recently starred in “Man of Steel” and will next be seen in Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah” and Akiva Goldsman’s “Witner’s Tale.” He’s in pre-production on his directorial debut with “The Water Diviner.”
“This is a performance-driven movie, and therefore I couldn’t ask for a better actor than Russell to deliver this intensely emotional drama,” Muccino said. “It’s edgy, heart-wrenching, and uplifting at the same time. To me, it feels like a classic American movie that recalls the great character dramas of the 70s.”
Clark developed the screenplay with Desch and it was one of the first projects under her new Busted Shark banner.
Voltage is handling foreign sales on the picture, and will be selling at the American Film Market. Dominic Rustam negotiated the deal on behalf of Voltage.
Muccino’s credits include “Seven Pounds” and “Playing for Keeps.”
Slight detail difference in this report from The Wrap including a filming schedule that would seem to conflict with the reported schedule for The Water Diviner. Excerpt:
Voltage Pictures is handling foreign sales and will be selling “Fathers and Daughters” at the American Film Market. Dominic Rustam negotiated the deal on behalf of Voltage, which is currently casting the role of Crowe’s grown daughter.
The film is currently scheduled to start pre-production in December. Voltage’s Babacar Diene is the production executive on the movie.
