‘Man of Steel’ shatters PH box office records
MANILA, Philippines — The new Superman movie starring British actor Henry Cavill shattered first-day box office records in the Philippines on Wednesday, when it hit theaters nationwide.
The third “Iron Man” film starring American actor Robert Downey, Jr. previously held the record when it posted a single-day gross of P62.9 million in April.
“This is a day of reckoning for Superman,” Francis Soliven, general manager of local film distributor Warner Bros. (F.E.), Inc., said in a statement released on Thursday.
“He’s a larger-than-life character beloved by millions of Filipinos, and this was proven today. Fans and families welcomed him back overwhelmingly as evidenced by the long lines, the ubiquitous Superman shirts everywhere, and the cheers at the end of screenings,” he said.
According to data from Warner Bros., the Zack Snyder-directed “Man of Steel” dominated the overall box-office with a 94% share on opening day.
The action flick’s first-day earnings also set a new record for Warner Bros. in the Philippines, two years after it released “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” which is the local distributor’s previous best single-day grosser with P28.3 million.
Now showing in theaters nationwide, “Man of Steel” traces the origins of the well-loved DC Comics superhero.
It stars Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Kal-El, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as Zod, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Russell Crowe as Jor-El.
