When the Gladiator star, who is holidaying on the Coast, called into a corner store patisserie with a friend on Friday the star-struck staff almost dropped their pies.
Crust Bakery manager Jess Koperu, who served the 48-year-old actor, said she was “giddy” with excitement.
“He was looking at our rolls and I straight away recognised him and said ‘excuse me sir, are you Russell Crowe?’ He just looked up at me and winked,” she said.
“I was shaky and trying not to be uncool but it was really hard to keep myself together.
“The shop was full and everyone was just star-struck.”
The Hollywood superstar had earlier spent about 10 minutes browsing the aisles of the chemist next door with his friend, who bought some sea-sickness medication.
But if Rusty was feeling crusty, his appetite wasn’t affected because he spent $65 on an assortment of pies, sausage rolls, a French stick and a coffee from the bakery.
“He asked Tegan, who was on the coffee machine, how good she was at a flat white,” Ms Koperu said. “We fully backed ourselves and he loved it.
“He said ‘thank you for your service, it was brilliant’.”
Crowe, who was understood to be staying at Terri Irwin’s nearby waterfront property, graciously obliged when staff asked for autographs.
Bakery assistant Tessa Lewis said she couldn’t concentrate on making coffee.
“I had to ask the customer three times what type of coffee she wanted,” she said.
“Some of the customers didn’t realise it was him until afterwards.
“He just wanted food. I think he was buying for other people though.”
Crowe is believed to be have been spending time with his boys – Charlie, 9, and Tennyson, 6 – at his Nana Glen property before bringing them to the Coast.
